Chapter Five

Killing the Unkillable

The door burst open. The sheer light that led her gun cut straight through the darkness. It touched every wall, every corner, and every piece of furniture. She pressed forward decisively. Soon, bookshelves began to line the walls. A chandelier, pale in the crude white light hung above her.

All was quiet and still, but her senses were keen and her instinct restless. The longer she went without finding a threat, the more dread built up inside her.

She flushed out the surroundings with her light as she spun around the large library from its center. As the beam of light extracted rows of books and assorted, decorative artifacts she came across a blinding white surface, unlike the rest. Down the hall, beyond the gap in the bookshelves, a white gown reflected the light. Jay saw it move, and the pale-painted face flashed at her instantly.

“FBI! Hands where I can see them!” Jay shouted as she hurried toward them. With the flash of a white smile, they quickly disappeared around the corner.

“Hey!”

The end of the hall came sooner than she had expected, and she pointed her barrel at the corner. To her surprise, she found none. She pressed her hand against the wall. It was astonishing. All around her, walls. Impossible!

She wouldn’t believe it. She raised her boot and kicked the wall hard, but of course, being a wall, it didn’t budge as easily as a door.

Something moved across her peripheral vision and when she turned, she saw a very faint version of herself. When she met her light reflection, she felt the smooth, cold glass against her fingertips. But the wall didn’t display your typical mirror: stained on its surface was a dark tint—so much so that even the glass swallowed up nearly all her gun’s extending light.

With peculiar speculation, Jay stepped back and noticed how the hall seemed to extend further again behind the mirror. After a moment of contemplation, Jay understood the unusual mirror became more transparent the further she went away from it.

Clever—just not clever enough.

One pull of the trigger was all it took: the glass wall shattered immediately. The sharp plentitude of shards jingled onto the wooden floor. The broken glass crunched underneath her boot as she continued down the hall, led by the face of her gun.

As she approached the corner, the faint, distinct sound of crying filled her ears. But she couldn’t mistake it for her ex-husband’s; this time, they were a woman’s cry. And they felt off. Like mourning rather than fear. But there was something else—something deeply unnatural about it

She paused briefly before the corner before committing to a full charge around it. Her gun landed instantly on the back of a woman—but her dress did not beam white—or at least it didn’t anymore: black streaks and blotches of soot defiled her gown.

As the woman sobbed, she rocked back and forth. She didn’t seem to notice or care that Jay had arrived. But Jay could tell she was cradling something in her hands.
